Propulsion systemsSince the mid 90's UNSW has been home to the Centre of Expertise, CoE, in Helicopter Structures and Diagnostics. Many projects have been undertaken for DSTO Propulsion systems under the centre of expertise scheme, including recent blind analysis of bearing faults located in a Bell Helicopter main rotor gearbox, successfully locating the presence and location of the bearing faults. Projects currently under research for DSTO Propulsion Systems include, amongst others, the investigation into using Gas Turbine casing vibration measurements to determine blade health, along with research into locating of bearing faults in a Gas Turbine engine. The CoE has supported various previous PhD candidates throughout its history some previous and current students supported include, Wee Lee Chia, Hiro Endo, David Hanson, Nader Sawalhi, Gareth Forbes. |

Maritime platformsUNSW has been involved with the modeling and reduction of the noise signature for the collins class submarines, through previous and current PhD student thesis projects such as those of, Paul Dylejko, Mauro Caresta and Sascha Merz. Initial modeling of the submarine noise signatures included deriving an analytical representation of the pressure hull with optimisation of the resonance changer between the propeller shaft support bearing and hull to reduce noise transmission and therefore noise radiation of the submarine due to propeller forces. Current students are working on further modeling, analytically and numerically, the hull in more detail so further optimization of the noise signature can be achieved along with active control methods being used to reduce radiated noise. |

Condition MonitoringCollaboration between Rolls-Royce and UNSW began in 2007, to further the use of onboard condition monitoring of bearing faults within aeroengines. Initial investigations have been undertaken by both Post doctorial research fellow, Nader Sawalhi and Prof. Bob Randall. |
